NEWBIESPLAYGROUND Unreal Contest 2021

DATE: 9th of August to 22nd of August 2021 : Single-Player Event
DATE: 9th of August to 22nd of August 2021 : Coop Event
DATE: 9th of August to 22nd of August 2021 : Challenge Event

Greetings to all Unreal players!

NEWBIESPLAYGROUND has organised a special Single-Player, Coop and Challenge Event for our 2021 Unreal Contest. We would like to take this opportunity to invite all players to participate in the Contest and its 3 Events.

The NEWBIESPLAYGROUND Unreal Contest 2021 will be an ideal time for Unreal players to assemble and enjoy some sociable competition in a peaceful environment.

The main principle remains the same for any of the 3 Events in the Contest. To finish first, the first objective is to stay alive.

The selection of maps will be as follows :-

Single-Player Event
  • SPIREVILLAGE (SpireVillage)
  • SKYTOWN (Na Pali Haven)
  • MPGLATHRIEL2 (MP Glathriel Village)

Coop Event
  • CEREMONY (The Ceremonial Chambers)
  • RUINS (Temple of Vandora)
  • SKYCAVES (Gateway To Na Pali)
  • DCRATER (DemonCrater)
  • EXTREMEGEN (Skaarj Generator)
  • MPNAGOMISUN (MP Nagomi Passage)
  • MPGLACENA (MP Watcher of the Skies)
  • MPNALIC2 (MP Escape from Na Pali)

Challenge Event
  • PASSAGE (Sacred Passage)
  • NOORK (Noork’s Elbow)
  • ISVDECK1 (ISVDECK1)
  • DCRATER (DemonCrater)
  • MPCRASHSITE (MP Approaching UMS Prometheus)

This year sees the introduction of a new Challenge event! Unlike the Single-Player and Coop events, the maps for the Challenge event are played in isolation and not in sequence.

Servers are available right now for online practice, prior to the start of the Contest on August 9th. Trial-Matches (practice) can be run by using the console command TRIALMATCH on the Contest’s SP and Coop servers. To initiate a Challenge match on the Contest's Challenge servers, the player simply uses the command CHALLENGE <MAPNAME>.

There is also a TRAINING Server to explore maps and it features all Single-Player, Coop and Challenge maps.

So! Grab your weapons from storage and head over to the Contest servers, where you will be most welcome!

This years Contest has already seen many great practice runs (Trialmatch) in the Single-player and Coop events and the Challenge event is proving to be a success with its shorter format and stricter time limits. I personally have seen every Challenge map completed and it is great fun to play and watch and has many entertaining moments!

It is amazing to see all the different strategies used by different players on any given map with their ammo conservation, choice of weapons to use for the more tough encounters and choices of other items to collect, like flares, seeds, flashlights etc. to make progression easier.

There is a great atmosphere on the servers and seeing how players have been helping each other with tips and tricks on the selected maps is a real treat to see!

This year has seen the introduction of the SPECSAY command, which allows spectators to communicate with each other without unnecessarily distracting the current player(s) too much and this implementation is a welcome addition.

So! If your weapons are still in storage then dig them out and have some practice with friends on the servers, in preparation for the start of the Contest on August 9th!

Best wishes to all players!

WooF!

The NEWBIESPLAYGROUND Unreal Contest 2021 is about at the halfway stage now and has already seen many great matches played!

This year has seen the introduction of infinite attempts in any of the 3 events SP/Coop/Challenge and this is creating a high level of friendly competition, with players' times for any event getting gradually closer and closer as the Contest progresses. This in turn means that players have a greater chance to post a nice score, there is more play and there is more action for any spectators to watch and it's certainly very entertaining to play and watch!

So, after 1 week of play and players investigating the maps and finding the best way to proceed, we think it's a good time to note some observations about each event.

Single-Player event

This years Single-Player event has SpireVillage as the starting map and this is purposeful. The idea is to have the "boss" map first instead of last, which kind of reverses the idea of putting the boss map last. SpireVillage has 4 Titans at this difficulty level and it's an intense immediate encounter! The map is short though and once players have successively made their way through this initial map, they encounter the more laid-back and longer map, SkyTown and then the somewhat shorter Glathriel2.

This is not to say that SkyTown and Glathriel2 are easy maps though, because it is crucial to keep an eye on weapons and ammo management on SkyTown, in order to arrive at the final map Glathriel2 and have sufficient firepower left to negotiate this final map, because the final map contains very few respawning weapons.

Note that this years Single-Player maps are all Nali settlements which provides a nice atmosphere!

Coop event

This years Coop event contains 8 maps and is somewhat shorter in average duration than in previous years, although it is definitely not easier because of the shorter time format. However with a little practice it soon becomes fairly obvious what is the best way to proceed. It sure is a fun selection of maps to play with a couple of friends!

The first map Ceremony sees the familiar Contest idea of players dashing immediately for another weapon, in this case the automag or 8ball. It's another classic starting map which breaks the players in gently for the later and tougher encounters on the maps DCrater and ExtremeGen.

SkyCaves is a short map, but cannot be taken lightly because there are no items of protection to pick up here and also no SuperHealth to be had either. But hey, here's a Rifle for the team!

The maps Ruins and DCrater are seperated from each other in map order but are linked in a very specific way!
DCrater of course is initially in near darkness and the main objective here is to turn the lights on for the tough encounters with the gunners and troopers. Stealth is required to achieve this objective of sneaking past the enemies to turn the lights on from the downstairs area first, in order to make the team's mission much easier. The map Ruins provides a way to do this, in the form of a translator message :-

vandora.png

The map NagomiSun is intended as an outdoor "breather" map after the many perils of the dark confinements of DCrater and ExtremeGen, although similar to SkyCaves, there is no protection to be acquired here either and it also contains a Titan, so this map cannot be taken for granted as simple by any means either. But hey it's good to be back outside with the sun shining isn't it?

Continuing with the Titan-theme this year, sees one the shortest maps in our game next, the cold and chilly map Glacena. Whilst this map could be described as relatively easy, it is important not to make a mistake here because of the players' movement differences on the slippery surface and the fact that some team-players might arrive here with depleted weapons/ammo and 2 Titans in a small enclosed area is never to be underestimated.

The final map in the Coop event is NaliC2, which seems fitting as it is the final map in our game and sees Prisoner 849 escaping the planetary surface for the second time. Nearly every Unreal weapon can be found on this map and progression to the shuttle ship should be straightforward enough, although as always, a successful encounter with the Warlord cannot not be taken for granted!

It is a real treat to arrive here with a couple of friends!

Challenge event

The Challenge event provides an opportunity for players to engage in a much quicker event, because each of the 5 maps are played in isolation and have their own scoreboard, so in essence, it is a speedrun! However every enemy must be killed in this speedrun to register as a completed map.

Its short and simple format provides a nice platform for players to just immediately dive in and register a score! As the name of the event suggests, this is not easy though because of the much stricter time limits and starting each map with the Dispersion Pistol only of course provides its own difficulties!

Out of the 5 maps, we would suggest that the maps Crashsite and Passage are the easiest, Noork could be considered medium difficulty and the maps ISVDeck1 and DCrater provide a very tough challenge indeed!

So for those players who have not participated so far and experienced this new format, we suggest trying MPCrashsite, Passage and Noork first and then attempting ISVDeck1 or DCrater, although each of the 5 chosen maps have their own unique difficulties and various tricks to employ to achieve a registered score.

We look forward to seeing more players this week and the further efforts of those who have already participated!

WooF!

The NEWBIESPLAYGROUND Unreal Contest 2021 is now over!

We say thank you to every player that participated in the Contest and pay homage to all those who posted a registered score/time. We are also grateful to every visitor who gave any kind of support to others but chose only to spectate on this occasion. This years Contest definitely brought a lot of us closer together and provided another chance to learn more about others and by extension, more about ourselves.

Newbiesplayground's goal with our Unreal Contest is to provide a platform for anyone of any ability from anywhere to participate in and enjoy. This ranges from those who want to finish first in any given event; to those who wish to improve their rankings from previous years; to those who want to finish with 0 deaths but the time is irrelevant; to those who may be participating for the first time and discovering what it is all about. Ultimately though, it's about everyone gathering together and playing our game - Unreal.

So! Without further ado...

Single-Player event

Congratulations to the winner of the Single-player event - Masterkent!

He played an absolutely phenomenal match with a score of 100 in a time of 13 minutes 50 seconds! The amount of dedication, knowledge and effort it takes to do this is almost beyond words.

Screenshot 2021-08-23 211524.jpg

It cannot go without mentioning though that the player [-{·E·}-]TommY-I pushed him all the way with his own fantastic effort and I am sure Masterkent, being the gentleman that he is, would wish this to be noted himself.

Well done to all players who registered a score and to those who improved their performance from earlier Contests or achieved new personal objectives in this event.

Coop event

Congratulations to the winning team of the Coop event - the Sigma team!

This team comprised of [-{·E·}-]LuCäSØ, [-{·E·}-]XaeroreaX and [-{·E·}-]TommY-I, who played a great match with a score of 197 in 28 minutes 45 seconds!

To achieve a time in this years difficult Coop event of under 30 minutes is very admirable indeed and goes to show their dedication and brilliant co-ordination as Coop team-players.

Screenshot 2021-08-23 211553.jpg

This year saw the noteworthy moment of all teams getting 197/197 frags, so congratulations to every team involved in this years Coop event, every match had its own unique moments and were very entertaining to either play in or watch.

The event this year also hosted a very special team, the Froesche team, which comprised of Mia, Nikola-(DOG)- and Hellgast. The reason this is very special is because Mia is an 8-year old young lady, whose skills are already very evident in our game! It gave immense pleasure to all that witnessed this match. So congratulations to you Mia! There was also a very special moment in this match when Mia was the only survivor on the map ExtremeGen and I personally think this is worth noting! A special thank you here also to Nikola-(DOG)- and Hellgast for giving her support on this fantastic occasion.

Challenge event

Congratulations to the winner of every Challenge map - Masterkent!

Once again Masterkent demonstrated his intimate knowledge of Unreal maps and his unique way of converting that knowledge into the skills required to beat any given map in the fastest time. Well done! We have all had much pleasure from viewing your Challenge runs!

It has to be noted here that the very tough maps ISVDeck1 and DCrater were the hardest challenge maps to achieve a registered score and so the players strategy-(DOG)- and waS95 deserve recognition for their success on DCrater and ISVDeck1 and Javix-(DOG)- also with his success on the map ISVDeck1.

Note that the map DCrater was used in the Challenge event on purpose because it also appeared in the Coop event and it's difficult enough staying alive with 2 team-mates on this map, nevermind starting this map in isolation with only the Dispersion Pistol!

Well done to all those who posted a successful run in any of the 5 Challenge maps. We saw players helping each other out with specific tactics and advice about how to achieve quicker times and this was a pleasure to see.

For a more detailed look at all the scores/times in the events from this years Contest, please visit the Scoreboard.

I personally would like to thank the admins Nikola-(DOG)-, Kragorth-(DOG)-, x21-(DOG)- and PMX-(DOG)- for their support on the servers and to other players, in particular to Nikola-(DOG)- who is always willing to dive in immediately to help out or to play in a team. In addition I say thank you to Smirfstch for his "background presence" in the Newbies Contest.

I would also like to say a huge thank you to Masterkent for the Contest gametype and his many updates to it, to enhance the Contest for all of us. Most notable this year was the introduction of the SPECSAY command which has proved to be an essential addition.

Finally we all have to thank strategy-(DOG)- with his dedication to hosting this event, his server knowledge, patience, the inspiration he gives to us all, not to mention his great Unreal skills also!

See you next year!

WooF!
