227I and unrealgold

Post by Oldsparky »

Making some interesting tests on 227I. Need some others to do the same. Install Unreal Gold from CD direct install. Act like a new player, and just set network to ISDN line and use d3d video. You can set your name. Get on and like a new player join the server, download files,, join map,, see what happens. I get D3D texture errors with mip map in log. Game crashes. I did this on a older dual core computer and its a fresh windows 7 install. In this case you should act like you dont know about 227 or Unreal.

It is important new players are not locked out of servers.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

This crash is related to a skin currently running on the server. It will also happen when you try it with standard Unreal and using D3D renderer. Can't say more about it right now, but I'll make some more tests, also with other renderers and let you know the result.
Because the skin is older than 227 I currently see no relation to it.

Ok, there is no real relation to the server. It also happens on a 225 server or in Single Player.
The cause for this crash is the skin, because it has not the Unreal standard format. The old renderers shipped with the game are not able to handle it.

Here again for all:
If you make a skin for Unreal make sure you use the standard format for it.
Size = 256 x 256
Colour = 8Bit/256 colors

and you will have no problems.

edit:The specific skin in this case is Female1Song.
The skin size is 1024x1024
The old renderers only support 256x256 :?: :?: :?:
This applies for D3D, but can't say it for OpenGL, because in the past I never could run it.
The new renderers like D3D9 have no problem with it.

Well, I can't say how many skins are affected.
edit:For me it seemed it was Female1Starlight, but it is Female1Song.
I would suggest first testing all skins then we will know exactly how many skins could cause problems.
That will not take much time and I send the result of it.

Ok, this seems a bit more complicated than I thought.
I started with the Female1 skins, but there are some skins with high color which even run with the old renderer.
I will go through the skins and test each single one on the player setup.
Then we will exactly know which skins cause crashes. Sorry, this will take more time.

In the mean time, those of you with problems, the second server is running 225 till this is resolved.

Ok, the problem skin is really Female1Song.
It seems the size is causing the problem and not the color depth.
I will give it a standard size, then the skin should work.

Rubi showed me the crashlog, I assume that the skin is maybe just DXT (S3TC). Another option would be to update Gold with the updated renderers included in the OMP and use D3D9 or OpenGL, both should cause no problems with this skin.

And sorry for being absent for a longer time now, just had busy times.

Hiya :)

There were only 2 skins not working with the stone age d3d renderer from Unreal.
The Female1 skin had a size of 1024x1024, a Male1 skin had a size of 512x512.
The Male1 skin is a bit weird because there are also other skins with this size, but they work.
Maybe it's the graphic causing this problem. Both skins have a very complex graphic.
I scaled them down to 256x256 and now they work without problems.
